This weeks learning...
This week within English in 4G we have been continuing to look at stories taking place within a fantasy setting. Our focus early in the week was to look at 'Similes and Metaphors' and how these enhance our writing! Mrs. Quinn and I were so very impressed with the creativity of the children in our class.
We watched a video on YouTube that was a silent fairy tale set in a quaint village in the dead of night. While everyone sleeps, shadows come alive and dance and play in the moonlight. But one shadow (we named him Shadow!) longed for something more meaningful. While walking across the rooftops he spots a light in a distant window...
Our children watched the video and use this as the basis of creative writing...we wrote an extended piece of writing describing the moment Shadow walked on to the rooftop (describing the buildings, moon, sky, cloud, feelings, emotions, colours and Shaow himself). We used similes and metaphors within this piece of writing...for example; Silently Shadow walked up the steep rooftop. The moon was a giant swirly football above the gloomy city.
Why not discuss this story with your children with the following questions...

Why not discuss this story with your children with the following questions...
- Discuss what the shadows are made of. Where do they come from?
- Can the children think of a better name for them than the shadows? It has been suggested that they are the 'heartless.'
- Discuss the relationship with the candle, why is he drawn to her? Again how do we show that they are sad?
- What happens next?
Next week, having planned stories today using a 'story mountain' the children we write their very own story set in an imaginary world...
Watch this space :-) ...we will post some examples of stories next week! In the meantime, chatting through the story over the weekend with your children will be a massive help come next week!
