How do Earthquakes impact on people's lives?
The children have been using secondary sources this week: book extracts, websites and images to research what it is like for people who have suffered from an earthquake. We looked at the Richter scale and how that describes the level of damage that earthquakes can cause and we learnt that there are frequently earthquakes happening that are so small we can't even feel them! Children found out that the higher magnitude earthquakes happen less frequently than the lower magnitude ones. We presented our findings in a mind map, explaining what we know about the effects of an earthquake.
Dilemma texts:
We have started a new text genre this week in our English lesson. We have been looking at stories which contain a dilemma. In order to really understand a dilemma, the children have been exploring the same story from different character's perspectives to understand the issues they face and the choices that they might have to make.
International day:
As we all know Dubai has a rich wealth of cultures within its city, and within JPS many different backgrounds are represented. Today was my first International day at JPS and I was blown away by the performances of the children, the effort that has been put into the stalls and of course, the thought and care put into the children's clothing for the day! The whole day was such an enjoyable experience really bringing to light what it means to be a part of our community. (The food was pretty good too!) Of course there are a great number of photographs from the day which I will include in this blog, to give you an insight into the wonderful time we have had! Thank you to everyone for such a big effort!
Stars...
The star of the week this week has to be Sarah, who has made a fantastic effort with her story writing and has shown a good improvement. Well done!
And finally... Please for Sunday next week could children bring in an empty water bottle. we are going to be making (and trialing) our own exploding volcanoes!
Also a reminder that Monday is of course the school's celebration of National Day. Children can come in wearing EITHER national dress, or their school uniform on the day and we will be celebrating the culture of the UAE with lots of fun activities throughout the day
