Nursery Rhyme Newspapers: As part of our 'recounts' genre, this week the children have been writing newspaper accounts of famous nursery rhymes. We looked at the rhyme of 'Little Miss Muffet' and a newspaper entitled 'Arachnid Attack!' for inspiration. The children have learnt the features of the genre and have begun to write some newspapers of their own based upon the nursery rhyme 'Jack and Jill'. We have had some interesting headlines, such as 'Infant Injury' and 'Toddler Tumble'. The children have learnt to write in the style of a newspaper and to add in commas for clauses where necessary. Rocket Investigation: This term in Science, we will be focusing on developing the children's scientific questioning and reasoning skills. This blasted off this week with children creating paper rockets that we can fire by blowing into a straw. They created these paper-straw rockets initially by following a set of instructions. This allowed us to create a working original product. We then thought about ways in which we could change the performance of that rocket and suggested alterations to it, such as the length, type of material, width and amount of force in our breath. Over the next week children are going to take control of their own learning, investigating these ideas changing only one variable at a time and work out whether that influences the performance. Evaluating Inventions: Continuing with our topic of inventions, children have moved on from looking at a timeline of how we have stored food in the past and the invention of the refrigerator, to evaluating the inventions of the last 2 centuries. Having established what pictures of each invention are, the children were left with the tricky task of selecting just 9 inventions from the list and then putting them in order of the significance they play in their 21st century life. There were some fantastic discussions, and would you believe the humble light bulb came first in many of the group's choices! And finally... star of the week: This week, my star of the week is someone who has stood out for their sensible and mature approach to their school work this week. Well done to Neil, you have been a great role model this week! |
